Background

This project will establish a research agenda and network for the emerging scientific field of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR).

Despite widespread public attention, the science of ASMR is in its infancy, with only a handful of research papers and groups. Our project will launch an ASMR research network (ASMRNet) comprising scientists, experts, and the ASMR community. This network will create a new ASMR research agenda leading to a prioritised list of ASMR research questions to drive future research collaboration.

What is ASMR?

ASMR describes a pleasant tingling sensation predominantly felt in the head that some people experience in response to triggers that include whispering, tapping, and personal attention. Scientific research on ASMR is at a very early stage: the first research paper was published in 2015 and since then there have only been small pockets of research, mostly by small research groups.

We now urgently need a collaborative research movement to accelerate progress. This should be driven by experts in ASMR and related fields (e,g, media, science, philosophy), ASMRtists and the ASMR community. Devising a new research agenda through a well-established consensus method (described below) will provide the focus needed given limited resources.

Our Goals

The goals of the project are:

1) To launch an interdisciplinary ASMR research network (e.g., from neuroscience to philosophy) – ASMRNet

2) To produce a collaboratively formed ASMR research agenda

We will use an established technique called ‘The Delphi Method’. This is a 3-stage process using online questionnaires and voting systems to generate consensus from experts.

100 selected experts will suggest research priorities for ASMR which will be collated and analysed into themes by the research team. Experts will then vote on the priority research questions. Finally, an in-person consensus meeting will allow discussion of the research questions, further voting, and a final generated list of the top 20 ASMR research questions for the field. The process and results will be written up for publication.

3) To provide an accessible online platform for everyone to access resources and up-to-date knowledge about ASMR research.

To complement the Delphi Method we will create a website for ASMR research. The website will facilitate: communication between researchers and the public, sharing of resources, and broadcasting of ASMR research (e.g., we will host an ‘ASMR research map’ allowing people to see where ASMR research is being done and how to get involved).

Why is this project Important?

The online ASMR community is growing rapidly: in December 2019 the top 10 ASMRtists accrued over 5.7 trillion views across their combined 4450 videos, with over 24 million subscribers. According to Ahrefs in March 2020 ASMR was the 3rd most common keyword search on YouTube worldwide. Unfortunately, the scientific research efforts required to match this popularity is lacking, with fewer than 20 published

research papers. Now is the time to close the gap between public interest and scientific research. By defining a new research agenda, our project will focus this emerging field and our limited resources, facilitate collaborative and efficient research, ultimately making new and important scientific discoveries on ASMR happen faster.

Potential Outcomes

Establishing an ASMR research network will accelerate ASMR research leading to a more mature science of ASMR. Co-creating a novel research agenda will raise the profile of ASMR research and develop a strong, interdisciplinary infrastructure for this field.

Working together will allow us to:

1) Generate the top 20 ASMR research questions for the field

2) Share knowledge and expertise from a range of different background and perspectives

3) Combine resources (like equipment and research materials)

4) Improve communication within this developing field which could help to secure greater funding for future ASMR research

5) Help us to involve the ASMR community in all stages of the research process, both now for the Delphi Method and in future research studies across the globe.

Ultimately, this has the potential to advance our understanding of a fascinating phenomenon with exciting implications for health and well-being.

Your budget

Funds are primarily sought for the final stage of the Delphi Study – an in-person consensus meeting – which is vital for ensuring a collaboratively derived research agenda. We are not seeking funds to conduct the research which will be done by the project team (costs absorbed by their institutions).

Catering Consensus meeting attendees will be working hard; we’d like keep them fed & watered to maintain concentration/motivation. Costs are £620.40 which will cover lunch and refreshments for 60 people.

Assistants To allow the project team to facilitate discussions, 2 assistants will help with the smooth running of the day. Costs are £305 which will cover 2 conference assistants for 10 hours each at a rate of £15.25/hour.

Travel We want as many people as possible to attend. A travel fund will support that; priority will be given to those most in need. Costs are £1000 in the first instance (more funds raised will be used to increase the travel fund).

Website A website will allow us to share our results with everyone and promote ASMR research. Costs are £2100 which will cover Website design and copy (£1500) and domain name and hosting for 5 years (£600).

Platform and payment processing fees Crowd.science charges 5% platform fee and payment processing is around 3%. Costs for the initial amount sought are: £322.02

If an in-person meeting is not possible due to the coronavirus situation, we will use the money to coordinate and run an online conference (e.g. technical support and video-conferencing software licenses)

If we raise more funds than we initially anticipate they will be used to fund ASMR research projects (e.g., specialist equipment, reimbursing participants). We will communicate clearly with backers where money has been spent. Please rest assured that all funds raised will be directly contributing to ASMR science!

Your team

Giulia Poerio

I’m a lecturer at the University of Essex UK Department of Psychology. Much of my research focuses on the interaction between cognition and emotion especially within the context of mindwandering/daydreaming.

I have a longstanding interest in ASMR (as an experiencer!) and set up an ASMR research group at the University of Sheffield in 2014. I’ve published a number of articles on ASMR including its physiological basis and a book chapter charting the rise of ASMR and my public engagement work at the Wellcome Collection.

Tom Hostler

I’m a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK). My research interests include the link between cognition and emotions, metascience and methodology, and the phenomenology of emotional experiences (including ASMR!)

I worked with Giulia on research studying the physiological basis of ASMR and have published a paper on how to measure ASMR, as well as writing in the media about the potential for ASMR as tool for reducing stress and insomnia. My latest work is a preprint on how “open science” can benefit ASMR research.

Tom Swart

I started my Ph. D. in the Banissy lab based at Goldsmiths, University of London at the beginning of 2019. In my current project, I’m investigating the mechanisms driving ASMR. Using neuroimaging techniques and measuring associated physiological changes I hope to help uncover what changes occur in the brain whilst experiencing ASMR.

Rossi Redgrave

I recently graduated from the University of York with an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience. I will soon begin working as a statistical officer within the civil service and, having experienced ASMR since I was a child, I have a keen interest in the subject.
